WWDKD (What Would Dean Koontz Do)
by Brian McGuigan
I want to be
a famous writer
but don’t have
readers
and just enough
to buy food
from the market
where I saw
Dean Koontz
his book sat
at a check stand
next to juicy fruit
and tabloids
about a half
man half goat
breeding with celebrities
he has more bestsellers
than all my
favorite writers
who never thought
to be sold
on sale
with a coupon
though I haven’t read
Dean Koontz
I wish
his readers
would read me
in line
for eggs
and milk
Brian McGuigan is part of a fledgling non-profit, from the ground
up, whose mission is to provide artists and writers
with a supportive and collaborative community. His work
has appeared in several small presses and has won a
few awards, but it ain't bringing in that Dean Koontz
money. Until then. This poem has previously appeared in the Write2Die chapbook distributed in Letter X, Volume 2.
