Writing Your Novel
Wednesday, October 20 through November 17, 7 to 9:30 p.m., $89 (5)
A class for writers, beginners and advanced, considering writing a novel. In five weeks, using a series of exercises and homework assignments, you'll learn how to construct a plot, develop characters, choose a point of view, research the current fiction market, and set up your life so you can begin writing your novel.
**You may be eligible depending on the level of work you do in this class to enter the second quarter of the Popular Fiction track which Waverly is teaching through UW Extension in winter.**

The One-Day Novel
Sunday, October 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $60
If you don't have time for the five-week "Writing Your Novel" class, consider the one-day version. Of course you can't write a novel in one day. But you can explore a premise, follow a story arc, get acquainted with your characters, spin off subplots, discern your theme, and experiment with various structures and points of view. Using playful in-class writing exercises, we'll look at each of these elements of the novel. Come with an idea and you'll leave with a good idea of how to transform it into a complete manuscript. A great kick-off for writers planning to enter the National Novel Writing contest during the month of November, (www.nanowrimo.com).

Altars of the Ancestors
Saturday, October 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $60
Create a tribute to one of your ancestors, in honor of the upcoming Days of the Dead. Bring any research, documents, and photographs (as color photocopies) you have of your ancestor. We'll spend the morning sharing stories and writing poems or essays. In the afternoon, you'll also create a pictorial tribute to your ancestor, which could be a collage or a shrine. Waverly has participated in the collaborative Ancestor Decks and will bring her cards. Guest speaker Noelle Remington will describe the Soul Collage(TM) process.

Short-Short Story Lab
Tuesdays, October 12 through November 16, 4 to 6 p.m.
Short-short stories don't take up much space, but they reveal the poetic punch of small worlds. In this class, we will take up short forms by the masters, such as Lydia Davis and Barry Yourgrau. In class, we will focus on writing at the sentence level, a great way to work on voice and style. Exercises will be designed to keep prose tight and power-packed. Outside of class, you will read from a packet and write a piece each week. You'll look closely at each other's work during the final two classes and offer constructive feedback (guidelines will be provided).
Instructor: Angela Jane Fountas
Time: Tuesdays, October 12 through November 16, 4 to 6 p.m.
Place: Richard Hugo House, 1634 Eleventh Ave.
Cost: $190/general; $175/RHH members
