Submit your Writing
Editorial Groups
The Zine is made up of three editorial groups:
We accept submissions to these groups at any time. If you have an idea
you’d like to query or an article you’d like to submit, please read this information
then follow the simple steps.
We look forward to working with you!
First, read the following descriptions of the subjects in each group and decide which group is the
best place for your submission.
Exploration
This section is divided into five parts:
Prose and Poetry
Members are encouraged to submit original prose and poetry. Length must not exceed
2,000 words for prose and 300 words for poetry.
Articles
Articles explore the innovations in the written word of other websites, as well as
general information and explorations about possible new forms, venues or genres.
Word length ranges from 600 to 1,000 words. Republished articles are welcome.
Member Contributions
Members of Writergrrls are encouraged to submit their own innovations in presenting
the written word. Unlike the Prose section, these works may utilize Flash, graphics
and other online tools as part of the presentation. In some cases, it may be necessary
to provide a description in the Writergrrls Zine, with a hyperlink to the work itself.
When applicable, word length ranges from 600 to 1,000 words. The more unique, the better.
Writers Workshop
The guidelines for this section may change as it evolves. For the time being, each month,
a new writing exercise will be outlined. Members are invited to submit entries via a
designated message board for one month. During the second month, critiques of the work
presented will be posted as another topic on the message board. Additionally, critiquers
will beasked to vote on their five favorite entries. During the third month, the top five
entries will be posted in the Zine.
Serial Novel
Although not quite in place at this time, the serial novel will encourage the participation
of any writer wishing to contribute to the evolution of a story. It too will use a message
board structure.
Opinion
This section is divided into four parts:
How-to
Articles where writers share their expertise on topics related to the Writergrrls’ quarterly
theme. How-to articles are intended to help readers acquire new skills and/or knowledge.
Generally, the word limit for articles in this area is 1,000 words.
Op-Ed
A place to share your opinion on topics related to the Writergrrls quarterly theme. Feel free
to rant, wax poetic, sing praises, or scratch an itch. All we ask is that you do so
within limits -- generally, about 500 words.
Reviews
Wanted! Reviews of books, products, music, et al. The item to be reviewed should be related,
albeit loosely, to the Writergrrls' quarterly theme. For example, if the theme is creativity
and you liked the way your carrot sticks were arranged on the plate at Café Flora, by all
means, send us a review. Generally, the word limit for reviews is 500 words.
Advice
An open environment where questions are fielded regarding any and all aspects of writing, be
they personal or professional. In some instances, the response will be written by one of the
Opinion section’s editors. In others, depending on the topic of the question, a guest writer
will help you out.
Membership
This section is divided into four parts:
Member Spotlight
This is a focus piece on individual members. A writer interviews the member and tells her
story as it relates to Writergrrls: her professional and personal writing and editing,
career path, ambitions, creative activities. It also examines what she gains from being a
Writergrrls member. Ideal length is 600 to 800 words.
Shared Experience
These articles are follow-ups to each of the monthly Writergrrls members meetings and any
other group events. The presenter is invited to provide their own article based on their
presentation. If they cannot or do not want to do this, a writer attends the event and
produces a report. This article should include links to supporting or background information.
Ideal length is 600 to 800 words.
Beyond the Zine
Blow your own trumpets! This section summarizes events, announcements and achievements involving
Writergrrls members.
Professional announcements might include:
- a book or article published
- a new job or promotion
- a company launch involving the member
Personal announcements might include:
- a book reading or exhibition
- a performance or concert
- participation in a charity event
If it involves you, we want to hear about it. Members are invited to submit brief details,
including any relevant links, with a word count of between 200 and 300 words. Submissions
will be compiled and summarized by a Membership section editor.
Steering Committee News
This will summarize the work being carried out by the Writergrrls Steering Committee and
will be written by SC members.
Editorial Guidelines
Please read this information carefully and make sure your
submissions fit with the guidelines.
Format for Submissions
Articles should be submitted as a Word document. If you do not have Word, submit articles in a
plain text document.
If your document requires special formatting (for example, text in color other than black or
the inclusion of images), please explain in a brief note at the top of the document. An editor
will contact you if they need further clarification.
The process for submitting articles and ideas is described below.
