Our Leadership Team

The Steering Committee (SC) is comprised of volunteers who coordinate events and meetings, update the Web site and zine, and establish list guidelines.

Treasurer

Laura McCarty moved from Chicago to Seattle in 1997 to find a place where nature and culture were both plentiful and accessible. She joined Seattle Writergrrls in March 2003, after moving from a fifteen-year career in management consulting to one focused on writing and non-profit information development. Her writing to date has focused on business writing and history. In her former career, Laura developed white papers and corporate reports for the financial services and energy trading industries. More recently, Laura has written essays for HistoryLink and is currently enrolled in the Literary Fiction Certificate through the University of Washington. Laura has a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Illinois - Chicago.

When not writing, Laura enjoys volunteering at the Seattle Bi-Lingual Orientation Center, running, yoga, and meeting with friends - all of which provide fodder for more stories.

E-mail Laura McCarty, Treasurer.

Volunteer Coordinator

Seattle Writergrrls' former Zine Facilitating Editor, Stephanie Shenk, stopped through New Orleans and San Francisco before landing here in Seattle. Her career to date includes a diverse range of editorial work, including interning at a literary society, writing for Gambit Weekly, filling the role of assistant editor for a business directory publisher, and doing various levels of editing work at Microsoft.

Stephanie brings to the Zine team, in its third year, a zest for creativity and the determined leadership that will surely drive it to new heights in 2003.

Favorite writing book: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg
Decade you should have lived, or would love to live again: 1960s, so I could be a hippie poet kicking up my barefoot heels in San Francisco
Best year of your life: Oh, I've had a few, probably some in my childhood that I can't remember. The ones I can recall are Spring of 1994 in Italy with my college, Summer of 1999 eating fancy and writing for papers in New Orleans, and Spring of 2002, rediscovering love and life in Seattle.
Favorite projects/hobbies: Wearing/acquiring outrageously cute clothing ;), exploring alternative publications (like print and Web zines), figuring out how to live a life of integrity
Pleasures (without the "guilt" or "sin"): Fountain cokes, blo-pops, movie popcorn, sleeping on the couch, compulsive and long cell phone calls to my mother and my best friend Melanie in Boston

E-mail Stephanie Shenk, Zine Facilitating Editor.

Technical Advisor

Phoebe Smith graduated from the Evergreen State College as a math and physics geek. Realizing that BA-level mathematicians are not so employable, Phoebe transitioned into computer geekdom. Focusing on web applications, she has worked as a engineer, an architect, and a trainer. Phoebe Smith currently works as a application developer for a large local bank.

Phoebe's an active gal. Her hobbies include rowing crew for the Lake Washington Rowing Club, running half marathons, and playing drums in her basement. She's been working behind the scenes as a technical advisor and then Lead List Administrator for Seattle Writergrrls since 2001. In 2003, she took over responsibilities as Web Site Coordinator.

If Phoebe Were a Car, She'd Be: A 1970's Toyota Landcruiser
Favorite "Get Out of a Bad Mood" Song: Anything by Fugazi
Little known fact: I am very particular about toast. I like it to sound toasty, but not actually change color.
Guitly Pleasures: Watching astoundlingly bad movies.
Something She's Proud Of: Finishing my first marathon.

E-mail Phoebe Smith, Technical Advisor.

Lead List Administrator

With a passion for music and a BA in English, Annette Stanhope made a perfect match as a researcher, cataloger, and writer for the Experience Music Project (EMP). While there she enjoyed some celebrity close-ups, and says it was a little more glamorous than previous gigs indexing for MSN Search and Encarta at Microsoft. However, she still remains interested in technical writing, indexing, and other forms of content management. After EMP downsized in February 2003, she briefly revisited Microsoft as a contract technical editor before joining her fiancé in Vancouver, Washington. Currently working as a contract technical writer for Hewlett Packard, she also pursues freelance writing projects.

A member of Writergrrls since its humble beginnings in October 1998, Annette maintains the Writergrrls mailing list as its Lead List Administrator and frequently posts job leads and article links to the list. In the past, she was the Web Site Coordinator and also single-handedly coordinated large social gatherings for members. Basically, she rocks.

Favorite fiction book: The Brothers K by David James Duncan
Favorite writing book: The Writer's Journal: 40 Contemporary Writers and Their Journals edited by Sheila Bender
If your life had a theme song, it would be: "Steady On" by Shawn Colvin
Favorite writing-related Web site: Hugo House
Favorite "sin" food: Baklava
Most outstanding accomplishment: Organized a citywide phone drive, pick-up, and delivery of enough Thanksgiving turkeys to feed more than 600 homeless in San Diego

E-mail Annette Stanhope, Lead List Administrator
