Snapshot: Waverly Fitzgerald
Where do you get your news?
I avoid it if at all possible. I try to keep track of what's happening locally by
reading the Stranger, the Weekly, and the Capitol Hill Times.
What’s your order in a coffee shop?
Double tall latte, no foam (except at Victrola where I don't have to mention "no foam" because they know how to make a great latte).
If you knew you would not fail, what would you do?
I'd write a lyrical and juicy historical novel set in 17th-century England (funny,
that's what I'm doing now).
What are you currently reading?
Strip City by Lily Burana.
What is the most bizarre place you have visited?
A pilgrimage to a ruined chapel—St. Michael on the top of Skirrid Fawr in the
Brecon Beacons [in Wales.] Either that or the house in which my great-aunt was murdered in
Burlington, WI, in 1905.
How did you learn about Writergrrls?
From my good friend and novel buddy, Janis Wildy, who's a Writergrrl.
Which historical figure would you like to have dinner with?
I've never understood this question. I know which historical figures I admire, but
I wouldn't want to have dinner with them. I'm easily tongue-tied around celebrities. I never
ask authors to inscribe a book to me at readings for the same reason.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I remember the first piece of sheet music I bought, which was "Stop! In the Name of Love."
I was so disappointed because it didn't sound anything like the song on the radio.
What is on your mouse pad?
Sorry, it's a boring blue.
What is your favorite color?
Lately I'm into warm tones. I painted the walls in my bedroom tangerine and quince.
Waverly teaches writing classes through Richard Hugo House, Experimental
College and the UW Women's Center, and coaches writers privately. She has also just finished a
detective novel set in Seattle. Waverly is now finally getting paid for her writing about
celebrating seasonal holidays at her Web site, School of the Seasons.
She lives in a brick apartment building atop Capitol Hill with a dog, Chester, a cat,
Faithful, and her daughter, Shaw.
