Montana Cowboys

By Peggi Swan

Cowboys aren't like they used to be.
Cowboys used to drive Cadillacs-
at least daddy's Cadillac on prom night,
and Camaros to school.
We drank Jack Daniels in the bathroom
and had Skoal etched on our asses.
We always wore black Tony Lamas
and sometimes Stetsons on river rafts or ski slopes.
When someone died we had a keg.
If they didn't, we dropped mescaline on Friday night.
We like blue-grass and David Bowie.
Spiderman was our hero-
Spiro Agnew was a watch.
Cops were pigs and pigs were cops and
we were all Deadheads,
and we liked it that way.
Hey, those were the days of real Cowboys.
Look around you now man.
Cowboys ain't shit.

Peggi Swan is a poet, writer and artist who lives in the Northwest. She works for Seattle Film Institute on Capital Hill.
