Exploration

Over Coffee

By Wendy Blake

Inside the theory of a timeless universe
where every frame in the motion picture
of human existence is a current, static, Now,

we have always been together;
we never lost touch.

And the moments we spent in the presence of our Nows,
pouring our minds over coffee into each others' need
to define our places of purpose in the tumbling scheme,

still exist in congruent spaces;
still direct my hobbled steps.

So the cup I sip, hot, here, doesn't take me back
to memories of youth-dreams. It reminds me:
naiveté endures and our coffee is fresh.

Wendy Blake, an editor and college writing instructor, has been a struggling poet all her life. Her work has been published in a host of small literary journals including Grub Street Wit, Stolen Island Review, and The Accompanist. She has authored several chapbooks of poetry, most notably Letting Bleed, Source Texts Incarnate, and Three, a trilogy published by Imagik, Inc. (Chicago, 2000).
