Carousel

By Maria J. Estrada

Dirt blew on a carousel
Bright red and yellow
A little more faded

The horses and elephants
The color of glazed
Birthday cakes
Without the spark

Kids didn't mind
Their laughter full of Nature
Heaven
Pieces of sugar
They made the place so Full

The carnival closed the next day
Bacteria rode the wind
The day the children played
Their skin became the color
Of dirty paper bags
Blood dripping from their ears
Noses
Like ice cream
In summer

They blamed God
They blamed government
But it was just the carousel
Going round
And round
Without destination.

Maria J. (Jesse) Estrada is a woman in the middle of Pullman's lonely wheat fields. She comes from a crazy Mexican family that inspires her writing on good days and makes her wish she were adopted by serious parents on other days. In her spare time, she likes to read science fiction, embroider projects she rarely finishes and psychoanalyze herself.
She is currently working on a post-modern narrative for publication in a Chicana writer anthology. She is also working on a compilation of poems, which she has titled, "Poemas de Amor Furiosos: Quit Playing Hard to Get You Delicious Bastard and Other Love Themes."
